Frequently Asked Questions
What do the Rip Chords do?
The Rip Chords arrange all of their own music and rehearse for various performances and gigs throughout the year. Additionally, the Rip Chords are the only treble group from UIUC to compete. The Rips perform a 10-minute competitive set at ICCA (International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella) every spring.
Outside of rehearsals, the Rip Chords are a tight-knit family that loves to spend time together and even hang out with our brother group, the Xtension Chords!
What does ‘treble group’ mean?
The Rip Chords strive to be a welcoming, gender-inclusive space. Though we typically sing upper-voice melodies that consist of soprano and alto voice parts, we welcome individuals of all gender identities to audition for us and be a part of our family.
How much do the Rip Chords rehearse?
The Rip Chords rehearse three times a week for 2-3 hours at each rehearsal. These hours may vary depending on if there is a performance or competition coming up, however, scheduling is flexible around the members’ lives. Many members are heavily involved in other extracurriculars, research, and sports.
Where can I catch the Rip Chords performing?
The Rip Chords perform at two concerts each year: Acatoberfest, hosted by No Strings Attached, and our annual Spring Show, which is typically held during Moms’ Weekend each year. You can also catch us at ICCA Quarterfinals in the spring. Additionally, we are seen opening for other groups around the Midwest and for other groups on campus.

How can I book the Rip Chords?
The Rip Chords would love to perform at your event! Please contact us through the form on our homepage or by directly emailing our Business Manager (theripchords@gmail.com). Our performable songs are typically listed on the ‘Repertoire’ page and we are able to adjust our sets and songs depending on the event. The Rips love to perform at galas, fundraisers, and other social or arts events.
How can I join the Rip Chords?
The Rip Chords are an auditioned group of about 15-17 members. Auditions take place in the fall semester of each school year. Auditionees must prepare a verse and a chorus of a song that best suits their voice, sight-read, and follow a warm-up led by the Music Director. If offered a callback, the auditionee will receive follow-up instructions on how to proceed.
Occasionally, the Rips will host mid-year auditions at the beginning of the spring semester. This is done on a case-by-case basis depending on the pool of auditionees and the group’s needs. If mid-year auditions occur, updates will be posted on social media.
What are auditions like?
Auditions typically take place during the first three days of school (August 26st-28rd for the 2024-2025 year). Auditionees sign up for a 10-minute timeslot to show off their voice/vocal percussion and test their skills. Walk-in auditions are also accepted. Callbacks focus more on blending with the rest of the group. Auditionees do not have to have prior experience with choir or a cappella, though singing experience is greatly welcome!
